Parky Padel

Padel is a fast-paced racket sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, played almost exclusively in doubles on an enclosed glass-and-mesh court. It requires hand-eye coordination, quick reactions and constant movement, which can improve general balance, stability and motor control, all important for People with Parkinson's.

As a new sport rapidly gaining popularity across the country, we’re fortunate to have secured a weekly session for People with Parkinson's on Fridays at Bluecoat Sports, Christ’s Hospital. Here we work on racket and game skills guided by a Padel coach as well as enjoying friendly match play (plus a social coffee afterwards ☺).

We benefit from the session being partially funded by a grant secured by Bluecoat Sports which helps cover coaching and equipment hire costs. We currently work across two courts with up to 12 participants and there is scope to grow this in line with demand.

If you’d like to join the Parky Padel group or want further information please get in contact. Carers are welcome but priority will be given to people with Parkinson's. A waiting list will be used if necessary.

PD Fit

High Intensity exercise classes delivered by Surrey Hills Rehab

What is PD Fit?

PD Fit is a bespoke exercise programme for People with Parkinson's, developed and delivered by the Surrey Hills Rehab team. The exercise classes are designed to get you working at high levels, often described as ‘80% of your maximum effort’. This is important as the medical evidence supports that this feature is the key part of current therapy that alters disease progression in Parkinson's disease.

The Exercise Classes

These can only be described as challenging and varied from one week to the next, but just to give a flavour of the type of activity you’ll be doing:

  • Ball throwing and catching
  • Intensive cardio sessions
  • Balance challenges
  • Dexterity exercises
  • Sequences
  • ... and many more, no weekly class is the same

All are designed to develop skills that People with Parkinson’s find challenging.

Assessment before you start and as you go

In order to deliver the PD Fit initiative safely the Surrey Hills Rehab team do a formal controlled assessment of your current physical level. This must be scheduled and completed before you can join PD Fit sessions.

The Assessment provides a baseline against which change in performance over time can be evaluated. The Assessment will be repeated annually with changes observed discussed individually by Surrey Hills Rehab staff with each attendee.

Costs

There is a high level of supervision for PD Fit, with two instructors at each session. The Horsham Branch contributes towards the costs of both the Assessment and Classes for members.

Current costs are £25 for an Assessment and £11 per weekly class.

PD Fit classes take place weekly in Mannings Heath Village Hall on Wednesdays as follows:
